Low birth weight may be cause of high blood pressure
May 27th, 2009 by admin
New research shows that low birth weight and not lifestyle problems could be the cause of high blood pressure. Things like stress and obesity still have an effect on blood pressure but people who were born under weight are likely to be more susceptible to hypertension.
Researchers in Edinbourgh studied elderly people and found out that the ones with the highest blood pressure also had low birth weight. They believe that a hormone called aldosterone plays a major role in regulating blood pressure. Aldosterone levels are set up early in life and may suffer in children born under weight.
If the findings are true it helps explain why some people with healthy lifestyles get high blood pressure. These people also find it difficult to reduce their blood pressure no matter what they do.
