The Medicinal and Analgesic Properties of Turmeric With Curcumin
September 24th, 2009 by admin
Curcumin is obtained from turmeric, a yellow spice used in Indian cooking, and it is no coincidence that it has been used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine for centuries to treat a wide variety of conditions. Today, it is best known as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and analgesic, and is similar in analgesic properties to aspirin, another anti-inflammatory.
Both aspirin and curcumin are what are referred to as COX-2 inhibitors. COX-2, or cyclooxygenase-II, is an enzyme that catalyzes the production of a range of unsaturated carboxylic acids known as prostaglandins. These attach to prostaglandin receptor cells, and initiate inflammation, the body’s reaction to tissue damage and other initiating events that cause swelling, fever and pain. A COX-2 inhibitor such as curcumin inhibits the catalytic action of the enzyme, and so prevents prostaglandins from being produced.
They therefore deal with the pain at source, rather than simply dull the nerves. This is a very effect way of dealing with pain and inflammation, and its antioxidant properties also enables curcumin to destroy any free radicals formed as a result of the inflammatory initiating event and so reduce the degree of cell damage also involved.
Curcumin from turmeric is available at a health food store in capsule or tablet forms. Always choose name brands of turmeric with curcumin to ensure that you purchase a product that is high quality and pure.
