Chicken Curry as Comfort Food

My mom was not the best cook when we were kids, but the one thing she made that was always spectacular was chicken curry. Her secret? In the house next door lived a family that had emigrated from India. During the days while the kids were at school, the two Moms became hard and fast friends. The best part was that the neighbor began giving my mom cooking lessons. She introduced her to turmeric and other exotic spices as she taught her how to make curry powder from scratch. To this day, I think of curry as comfort food and when I get nostalgic, the chicken curry recipe (still in my mothers handwriting) comes out of the card box.
