What are Gun Dogs?
March 28th, 2009 by admin
Gun dogs are particularly important for the solitary small game hunter. The most invaluable of these is the retriever. Many people own Labrador Retrievers or Gold Retrievers, but even the standard poodles works well as a retriever. The primary function of a retriever is to return killed game to the hunter without damaging it. They are principally bred for their gentle mouths and their eagerness to obey. A valuable retriever must be a calm animal, able to wait patiently until sent to retrieve game. This is particularly useful when hunting waterfowl because an impatient gun dog can capsize the hunter’s vessel or cause accidental firearm discharge. Retrievers are particularly trained to mark downed game on command, following the direction of the prey or gun barrel to determine the location of the fallen game. An especially well-trained retriever can even perform a “blind retrieve,” that is, can follow hand, voice, or whistle commands from the hunter to direct them to the fallen game.
